Os incêndios que atingiram o Baixo Vouga em 2024 evidenciaram a necessidade urgente de reorganizar a gestão florestal num território marcado pela pequena propriedade e pela falta de escala. Em resposta, a Associação Florestal do Baixo Vouga (AFBV) está a intensificar a implementação das Áreas Florestais Agrupadas (AFA), um modelo colaborativo que permite unir proprietários, otimizar intervenções e aumentar a resiliência da paisagem.
Ao longo deste ano, cinco novos projetos de AFA foram colocados no terreno. O objetivo da AFBV é ambicioso e bem definido: alcançar, até 2025, um total de 12 projetos, envolvendo cerca de 135 proprietários e abrangendo 170 hectares de área sob gestão organizada.
As Áreas Florestais Agrupadas têm também obtido reconhecimento internacional, tendo sido selecionadas como uma das iniciativas relevantes no âmbito do projeto europeu SMURF, dedicado à pequena propriedade e à mobilização dos proprietários florestais. Esta distinção sublinha a relevância do trabalho desenvolvido no Baixo Vouga e abre portas a novas metodologias, iniciativas de formação e oportunidades de cooperação técnica.
Segundo a AFBV, “a expansão das AFA é uma resposta sólida aos desafios que o território enfrenta. Só com organização e gestão contínua será possível reduzir o risco e valorizar a floresta”. Com esta estratégia, a AFBV reafirma o seu compromisso em tornar o Baixo Vouga um território mais seguro, mais produtivo e mais sustentável.
AFBV strengthens commitment to Grouped Forest Areas after the 2024 wildfires
The wildfires that struck the Baixo Vouga region in 2024 highlighted the urgent need to reorganize forest management in a territory marked by small-scale ownership and lack of management continuity. In response, the Baixo Vouga Forest Association (AFBV) is intensifying the implementation of Grouped Forest Areas (AFA), a collaborative model that brings landowners together, optimizes interventions, and increases landscape resilience.
Throughout this year, five new AFA projects have been launched on the ground. AFBV has set a clear and ambitious goal: to reach a total of 12 projects by 2025, involving around 135 landowners and covering 170 hectares under organized management.
Grouped Forest Areas have also gained international recognition, having been selected as one of the relevant initiatives within the European SMURF project, which focuses on small forest holdings and landowner mobilization. This distinction highlights the significance of the work developed in the Baixo Vouga region and opens the door to new methodologies, training initiatives, and technical cooperation opportunities.
According to AFBV, “the expansion of AFA is a solid response to the challenges faced by the territory. Only with organization and continuous management will it be possible to reduce risk and enhance the value of the forest.” With this strategy, AFBV reaffirms its commitment to making Baixo Vouga a safer, more productive, and more sustainable territory.
